CHITTAGONG, Oct 03: Persisting gas crisis in Chittagong further deteriorated and as per the latest information, the daily gas deficit stood to over 55 million cubic feet. Under the circumstances, industrial production is greatly threatened.
It has created concern among the industrial entrepreneur, business circle and even Bakhrabad Gas System Limited (BGSL) authority itself as the gas supply from the transmission network of the National grid has been declining gradually.
Expressing concern over the situation, BGSL Chittagong office has drawn attention of all so that the industrial entrepreneurs refrain from establishing any gas based industrial unit without clearance of the concerned authority.
On the otherhand, as the apex trade body of the region, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) in a recent message sent to the government also expressed concern over the persisting situation and said, on behalf of a good number of recently established industries here, BGSL authority has been approached for ensuring adequate gas supply. But adequate gas supply still remains uncertain.
According to the BGSL sources, total requirement of gas in Chittagong is 300 million cubic feet. But in view of reduction in production of Bakhrabad, Sangu, Feni, Salda and Meghna gas fields, gas supply in Chittagong has declined.
It was once stated that due to fluctuation of pressure, it was not possible to ensure gas supply to the transmission line of Chittagong from Sylhet transmission line. Concerned sources can not say anything on improvement of the situation, at this stage.
