Gas field at Rupgonj
Saturday, 28 June 2014
It is good to know that the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation has found a marginal gas field at Rupganj in Narayangonj district and it has been estimated that the newly discovered gas field has a reserve of 50 billion cubic feet and would be able to supply 10-15 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid. We have no dearth of natural wealth. We have a fertile land and mother Nature has been very kind to our country. We are not poor by any standard but excessive corruption and mismanagement continue to drag us in the list of the least developed countries. We have to come out of this shackle. We have to use our natural resources in a planned manner and economically. We must not forget these natural resources are limited and we must not let the parasite of corruption eat it away.
Gas is an important source of energy and we are lucky that we have a good reserve of gas and we must use it to our advantage. Additional production of gas will help us set up more industries and thus create new jobs. If the government can provide gas, foreign investors will be encouraged to invest in our country. This will also create employment. We want the government to ensure proper utilisation and transparency of this sector so that the country can derive maximum benefit from the new-found gas resources.
