Gas stoves and match box
Monday, 10 August 2009
A few days ago, I went to Dhaka and stayed with my friends and relatives for about two weeks. I found that the gas stoves in all the houses burn all day long and this troubled me.
I get up early in the morning to say my Fazar prayer. So, while in Dhaka, every morning I used to turn off the gas stove in whichever house I happened to sleep in the night. I did not find any match box near the stoves. In Rajshahi, I use gas cylinder, which costs taka one thousand. A gas cylinder hardly last 20 days. But if I keep the stove alight all the night, the cylinder will be finished in a night. Hence, whoever uses a gas cylinder, he puts off the stove immediately on the completion of the heating or cooking job.
There is a talk that the government will distribute energy-saving lamps free across the country to save electricity, taking loan from the World Bank. The government should, likewise, distribute match boxes among the users of gas for domestic purposes in order to save the costly natural resource. Text books should also include lessons on values like saving natural resources.
