Gayeshwar on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court on Friday placed detained BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and three other leaders of the party on a three-day remand in a case filed for obstructing on duty police and assaulting Awami League MP Chhabi Biswas in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Tasruzzaman passed the order after Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station Sanaullah Miah produced the BNP Standing Committee member and three other arreste leaders – Atiqur Rahman, Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Mizanur Rahman – before the court and sought a 10-day remand for them each. Gayeshwars’ lawyer, however, filed a bail petition only to be turned down by the court. Plainclothes policemen picked up Gayeshwar from a house in the city’s Shiddheshwari area around 6:30am on Friday. Sanaullah Miah, also the investigation officer of the case, said they sought the remand to gather more information about the assault on MP Chhabi Biswas and vandalising his car in front of the DMCH on Wednesday afternoon. Later, a case was filed with Shahbagh police in this connection, according to a news agency.
