Gazipur clash: Gun-totting 2 among 14 held

Police on Sunday arrested 14 people, including the two gun-totting ones, in connection with Saturday’s clashes between the supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate and its rebel contestant in the election to Sreepur upazila. The officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station said they conducted drives at different places since the morning and arrested them. The arrested include central Jubo League committee member Kafil Mondal Jewel, Kamrul Hasan, Mehedi, Yusuf Ali, Liton, Shipu, Mohammad Selim and Imran. Of them, Quamrul and Mehedi brandished firearms during the clash on Saturday. At least 30 people were injured, including one with bullets, in a series of clashes between the supporters of the two chairman candidates in Sreepur on Saturday. Supporters of AL candidate Iqbal Hossain Sabuj, also organising secretary of the party district unit, and rebel candidate Abdul Jalil locked in the clash when both the groups gathered in front of AL Sreepur upazila office on Saturday morning. Sreepur municipality unit Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Al Amin who suffered bullet wounds was rushed to Apollo Hospitals in the capital where he is yet to regain his senses, said his brother Alamgir Hossain. Meanwhile, two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh members have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble, said Deputy Commissioner M Nurul Islam, according to a news agency.
