FE Report
Grameen Bank (GB) authorities sought foolproof security from the law enforcement agencies for its staff members after the recent abduction of its union leader Sagirur Rashid that created panic among the staff of the Nobel-winning organisation. An official statement issued Sunday said every person involved with the bank from its borrowers to employees at all levels is part of its most valuable resource and their safety is a matter of concern. "This incident has created deep concerns for safety of Grameen Bank staff that will also hamper the bank's daily activities," it said, seeking special attention of the law enforcing agencies to ensure the safety and security of the bank staff. The statement signed by its General Manager of Information & Media Co-Ordination Jannat E Quanine stated that a group of about 10-12 kidnappers abducted Sagirur Rashid Chowdhury, spokesperson of the GB Employees' Association on May 06 from near the GB area. The criminals had driven him to a location which he later found was on the campus of Dhaka University. "Sagir was later freed on condition to pay a ransom of Tk 0.3 million and promise not to involve himself with any pro-Yunus movements," the statement said. It said the union leader was also physically tortured before his release.
