GDP growth at satisfactory level, says Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Thursday informed Parliament that the GDP growth of Bangladesh is at a satisfactory level compared to other countries in Asia, reports UNB.
"Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) estimated that the GDP growth for the current fiscal will be 5.88 percent despite recession in the world economic sector," he said replying to a tabled question of Golam Dastagir Gazi (Awami League-Narayanganj).
Muhith said this year's growth is 0.31 percent lower than the previous year, but the current growth is at satisfactory level compared to the other countries in Asia.
Replying to a question of KH Rashiduzzaman (AL-Kushtia), the finance minister said the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have committed to provide US$ 1460.90 million as loans to Bangladesh in the first ten months of the current fiscal year.
Of the total amount, the World Bank has committed to give US$ 1034.70 million while the ADB will give US$ 426.20 million.
Over the same period, the World Bank and the ADB have disbursed US$ 1019.43 million, the Minister said, adding that of the amount, World Bank disbursed US$ 557.89 million and ADB disbursed US$ 561.54 million.
Replying to another question, the finance minister said the government is continuing its sincere efforts to bring new areas under the tax net aimed at increasing the country's revenue income.
"Efforts are on to find out new areas of tax through expansion of the tax net," he said while replying to a question of opposition bench member Joynal Abedin (Feni-2).
The minister said works for finding out new tax areas are going on through conducting survey, identifying self-motivated tax payers, collecting sources of income tax in rental power company, collecting advance income tax in the account of post office savings and bringing salaries of foreign technicians under the income tax.
Responding to another question by treasury bench member Opu Ukil (Women seat-2), the minister said the government has taken various efforts to increase flow of foreign remittance.
He said special efforts have been made in collecting and distributing remittance aimed at raising inflow of remittance.
