US Chargé d' Affaires Geeta Pasi Sunday met Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami and other party leaders at the Jamaat office as part of her round of talks with different political parties, report UNB and bdnews24.com.
The US diplomat discussed the country's current political situation and the status of the upcoming national election with the Jamaat leaders.
Reaffirming the US support to Bangladesh's electoral process, Geeta Pasi laid emphasis on the government's dialogue with the political parties in the larger interest of holding a credible election.
"The government's dialogue with the parties is very important towards holding an acceptable election. Also, the political parties have some responsibilities to arrange the election successfully," she said, in continuity of her latest political mediation effort.
In a hasty encounter with the waiting journalists after the meet, the US envoy said her meeting with the Jamaat was nothing but the continuation of a process that had begun earlier with the meetings with Awami League and BNP.
"My message to the Jamaat was very much same as I also had given to Awami League and BNP during meetings with them. The US will continue its supports to Bangladesh for holding the next general election in a free and fair manner as per the country's electoral roadmap," Geeta said.
