Gen Moeen meets Pranab, Jairam, Pallam in Delhi

Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed called on Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi Monday, and discussed important bilateral issues, report UNB and bdnews24.com.
He had also meetings with Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh, and Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju in the Indian capital on the second day of his India tour.
During the meeting with Pranab Mukherjee, discussions focused on specific ways in which both Bangladesh and India can carry forward their bilateral relations through a process of accretion in terms of concrete progress in all areas where such cooperation would be beneficial to both of the countries.
General Moeen requested the Indian External Affairs Minister to expedite the dispatch of the 0.5 million tones of rice to Bangladesh, which Dhaka has decided to procure through the government-to-government level amid ongoing food shortages.
Pranab Mukherjee informed Moeen that notification has been made for the first 50,000 tonnes, and the processes for dispatching the remaining amount would also be completed "soon."
The Bangladesh Army Chief also requested the Indian External Affairs Minister to allow the Bangladeshi private importers to import rice from India as well, in addition to the government procurement. The External Affairs Minister assured that the Indian government would actively consider the request.
During the meetings with Pranab Mukherjee and Jairam Ramesh, General Moeen discussed various possibilities of further improving trade and commerce between Bangladesh and India, and the growth-oriented and trade-creating investments.
The Army Chief was informed that the final notification on the duty-free export of 8.0 million pieces of ready-made garments from Bangladesh into India would be issued soon.
During the meeting with Minister of State for Defence Pallam Raju, several concrete ideas regarding training of armed forces personnel in each other's training institutions, and capacity building in the area of specialised treatment in medical institutions were discussed.
They also stressed sharing experiences on disaster management, and greater interaction on matters relating to participation of the troops of the two countries in the UN peace-keeping operations.
Meanwhile, Indian Chief of Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor Monday presented six horses to his visiting Bangladesh counterpart as a gesture of goodwill and friendship.
On the occasion, both the chiefs hoped that the friendly relations that tie both the neighobours would "progress from strength to strength."
