Gen Moeen resigns as NSC chief

Tuesday, 21 April 2009

Gen Moeen U Ahmed has resigned as chairman of National Sports Council (NSC) amid controversy over a football sponsorship deal, report UNB and bdnews24.com.
"The army chief sent his resignation letter citing personal reasons to the sports ministry," Bangladesh Olympic Association CEO Col Waliullah said.
Around 3:15pm an official at the sports ministry told the reporters that the resignation letter had reached the ministry half an hour back.
"To strengthen the democratic process, the charge for sports should be vested on political leadership," state minister for sports Ahad Ali said.
Thanking Moeen, he said, "He took over the charge of sports during a transitional period, and tried his best to discharge his duties."
Recently, the presence of Moeen in a sponsorship deal created huge controversy. Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), which is under the National Sports Council, struck the Tk 45 million deal with Bashundhara Group for football sponsorship.
Fugitive chairman of Bashundhara Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and BFF president Kazi Salahuddin signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisation on April 12.
The Bashundhara chief, his family members and all directors of the company were sued amid the anti-corruption purge during the rule of the immediate-past army-backed caretaker government. All of them were convicted in cases filed against them, and were reportedly hiding abroad.
