Sunday, 14 February 2021

Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed returned home on Friday morning, ending his official visit to the USA, says an ISPR release.
General Aziz visited the United States at the invitation from his US Army counterpart. He had left Dhaka for the USA on January 29. During his stay in the USA, General Aziz met his US Army counterpart and other senior officers and visited different military installations and training facilities.
Besides, he held meetings with important persons related to the UN peacekeeping mission.
On February 2, General Aziz called on the deputy assistant secretary to the Office of the Secretary of Defence for Policy South and Southeast Asia, and the representative of Defence Security Cooperation.
They discussed various issues of bilateral cooperation between the two countries during the meetings.
On Rohingya issue, the Army Chief expressed the hope that the US would stand by Bangladesh and play an important role in this regard.
General Aziz also put emphasis on sending back Rashed Chowdhury, a fugitive death-row convict in Bangabandhu murder case, to Bangladesh as soon as possible.
On February 4, a guard of honour, on behalf of US Army Chief of Staff General James McConville, was given to the Bangladesh Army chief.
Later, General Aziz paid a courtesy call on his US Army counterpart and discussed, in detail, the issues of mutual cooperation and how to further strengthen the relations between the armies of the two countries.
Last week, General Aziz exchanged views with the military adviser at the UN peacekeeping mission, under-secretaries general, and the permanent representative of Bangladesh to the UN.
At the beginning of the meeting, senior UN officials highly praised the professionalism of Bangladeshi peacekeepers.
The visit of General Aziz would play an important role in increasing the number of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in the UN peacekeeping missions and the representations of Bangladeshis at the policymaking/force command level, said the ISPR release.
