Generation capacity of Ghorashal power plant reduced to half

A fire incident has forced the country's largest Ghorashal power plant to shed half of its total generation capacity worsening the country's overall electricity supply situation, officials said.
The fire on Sunday damaged a turbine of the 950 mw Ghorashal thermal power plant reducing its overall generation by 490 mw.
A three-member committee has been formed to investigate into the accident, said a senior Power Development Board (PDB) official.
The country's overall electricity generation was hovering around 3750 mw during Monday's peak hours as technical glitches cut 1,042 mw of electricity generation.
Electricity generation was around 3,567 mw during day time Monday.
Production of electricity at the major power plants of Haripur, Khulna, Shiddhirganj has been affected by technical glitches.
Gas crisis hampered generation of around 776 mw of electricity across the country Monday.
Rauzan, Shikalbaha and Tongi power plants are worst hit by gas shortage leading to halting of electricity generation from these plants.
The country has witnessed the worst power crisis in many month following the fire incident and subsequent production cut at the Ghorashal plant since Monday.
Industrial output has been suffering a serious setback due to the deteriorating power supply situation. Business and normal day to day activities are being hampered out of the power crisis.
In Dhaka, load shedding was the highest -- 456 mw, followed by 178 mw in Chittagong, 155mw in Khulna, 132 mw in Rajshahi, 100 mw in Comilla, 76 mw in Mymensingh, 70 mw in Rangpur and 30 mw in Barisal.
