German offer on factory safety
Wednesday, 29 October 2014
It's indeed good to know that Germany is ready to share their knowledge about apparel factory safety and help Bangladesh implement it. The European market is the largest for Bangladesh's readymade garments (RMG) and the export item is enjoying duty-free access there. I hope, not only Germany, other developed countries will also come forward and help ensure safety of Bangladeshi RMG workers.
The government of Bangladesh, RMG factory owners and foreign buyers need to join hands and improve the working condition in the apparel sector, as it will be beneficial for everyone in the long run. After the Rana Plaza disaster the world has woken up and taken notice of the RMG sector in our country and I hope ultimately it will help us improve the overall condition of the RMG sector. The RMG sector is the largest employer of Bangladeshi women. Through it women in Bangladesh are finding their economic freedom and it is only the beginning.
In 1980s there were only few factories in our country, but now we have more than 5,000 units and the number is increasing day by day. I thank Germany for their praiseworthy initiative and I hope others will follow suit and come forward to help improve the working condition in the RMG sector.
