Germany to provide EUR 200m for renewable energy, climate change projects

Germany will provide EUR 200 million, equivalent to Tk 1.8 billion, for six projects in Bangladesh mainly in the renewable energy, climate change and water resource sectors for attaining sustainable development goals.
Of the amount, EUR 172 million will be available as financial cooperation and EUR 28 million as technical cooperation.
Two bilateral agreements in this connection were signed at Economic Relations Division (ERD) on Tuesday. ERD Secretary Monowar Ahmed and German Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Fahrenholtz signed the agreements on behalf of the two governments.
High officials from the German Embassy in Dhaka, the German Development Bank KfW, the German Technical Cooperation GIZ, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources BGR and the government of Bangladesh were present.
Of the total cooperation, EUR 89.5 million will be provided for supporting renewable energies and EUR 70 million for energy efficiency. EUR 26 million will be provided for climate change adaptation in urban areas, EUR 7.5 million for textile, EUR 4.5 million for water resources management under the Saidabad III water treatment plant, EUR 4.0 million for Sundarbands Mangrove Management Plan and EUR 2.0 million for study and expert fund.
Germany has provided EUR 3.0 billion financial and technical assistance since 1972 for developing and supporting infrastructure, health, poverty alleviation, good governance and human rights, energy efficiency and renewable energy, climate change adaptation. Recently it also provided support to the Rohingya and host communities in Cox's Bazar district.
