Thursday, 23 October 2014
The condition of war crimes convict Prof Ghulam Azam deteriorated early on Thursday. He stopped talking since Wednesday night, confirmed a doctor treating him at the CCU of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the city’s Shahbagh. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court (SC) has fixed December 2, 2014, to start hearing the appeal filed by Ghulam Azam. The nonagenarian former Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami on September 5 last year appealed to the SC seeking an overturn of his conviction and the ‘jail until death sentence’ he received from the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on July 15, 2013 for wartime offences. Azam, 92, who has been suffering from various old age complexities since long, was shifted to the CCU of the BSMMU from a prison cell of the hospital last month. About his current physical condition, a BSMMU doctor said he has gallbladder stones and high blood pressure. However, the physician said Azam's blood pressure is now under control, according to a news agency.
