NILPHAMARI, May 16: Cultivation of Ginger is going in full swing in all the six upazilas of the district.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said this year's target area of Ginger cultivation is 2,050 hectares of land and production target is 20,841 tonnes.
Ginger cultivation in the district did not increase as the crop became vulnerable to various diseases and virus in the previous years.
Nilphamari produces more then 50 per cent of the total ginger produced in the country, as the soil of the district is very conducive to yield the spice.
Virus-free and hybrid ginger seed is not available in the country. Soil borne and seed borne diseases hinders production every year. Moreover, soil treatment and seed treatment is totally absent.
If hybrid and virus-free seed is provided, Nilphamari could meet the demand of ginger of entire country, concerned sources said.
