Ginger, garlic, flour up further ahead of Eid

FE ReportPrices of ginger, garlic and flour further showed an upward trend while those of other essentials including rice, edible oil and sugar were stable in the city's kitchen markets, traders said Friday.
They said shortage of supply against the demand is responsible for the recent hike of both packed and unpacked flour.
Prices of unpacked flour (Maida) grew by 7-8 per kg and ranged from Tk42 to Tk 44 per kg. The packed variety also went up by Tk 8.0 per kg and was sold between Tk 46 and Tk 48 per kg in the city's kitchen markets.
Prices of flour (Atta) also increased by Tk 2 per kg. Retailers charged Tk 26-31 for a kilo of unpacked item and Tk 63-64 for a two kg packet Atta.
Prices of garlic and ginger witnessed hike ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, traders said.
Garlic prices hovered between Tk 55 and 70 per kg rising by Tk 5 per kg and ginger is selling at Tk 60-80 per kg, which was Tk 50-80 per kg in the previous week.
Prices of other essentials including rice, edible oil, vegetables and fish maintained the earlier high trend, traders said.
Sugar traders said there was no shortage of the commodity as import from India increased. They said private refiners also slashed prices of sugar to Tk 60 per kg after shipments from India.
The sweetener was selling at Tk 55-56 per kg at the wholesale market and priced at Tk 60-64 per kg at the retail level.
The imported variety of onion was selling between Tk 28 and Tk 32 per kg, down from Tk 30-34 per kg and the local one remained stable at Tk 36-40 per kg last week.
Prices of fine varieties like Minicate ranged from Tk 42 to Tk 46 per kg and Nazirshail from Tk 48 to Tk 54 per kg.
Paizam, Guti Swarna and BR-28 were selling at Tk 36 to Tk 40 per kg and IRRI is at Tk 32-34 per kg.
Loose edible oil was selling at Tk 110-112 per litre and palm oil was at Tk 97-100 a litre, traders said.
Five litre canned brands such as Teer, Fresh and Rupchanda were sold between Tk 590 and Tk 600.
Prices of egg ranged between Tk 26 and 28 for a unit of four pieces.
Prices of lentil were from Tk 85 to 100 per kg according to quality while the mugh variety was Tk 90-125 per kg.
Winter vegetables have started arriving in the kitchen markets and retailers are charging higher on these items.
Prices of green chili ranged from Tk 120 to 160 per kg while those of tomato leapt to Tk 100 per kg from Tk 80.
Brinjal was selling at Tk 40-50 per kg, patal at Tk 40 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 40-60 per kg, bean at Tk 80-100per kg, cauliflower at Tk 35- 40 and cucumber at Tk 40-50 per kg.
Potato was selling at Tk 15 per kg. Other vegetables like crescent gourd, arum root, snake gourd and ridge gourd were selling at Tk 40 to Tk 70 per kg in different markets in the city.
Fish was selling at the earlier high prices. A pair of medium size hilsha was selling at Tk 1000-1200 and shrimp ranged from Tk 450 to 850 according to size, katla at Tk 280-300 per kg, koi at Tk 200-230 per kg, pangas at Tk 120-150 per kg, tilapia at Tk 140-150 per kg, magur at Tk 400-600 per kg, and sing at Tk 550-600 per kg.
