NILPHAMARI, Mar 23: Harvesting of Ginger is going on in full swing in all the 6 upazilas of the district. The Department of Agriculture extension (DAE) sources said this year's target area of ginger cultivation was in 2050 hectare of land and production target was 20,841 tonnes. Sources said ginger cultivation in the district did not increase because the crop became vulnerable to various viruses in the previous years. Sources added Nilphamari produces more than 50% of the total ginger produced in the country as the soil of the district is very much friendly for ginger cultivation. Virus free and hybrid ginger seed is not available in the country and soil borne and seed borne diseases hinder production every year. Moreover soil treatment and seed treatment is totally absent.
