Girl killed, 67 establishments gutted in Ctg fires

CHITTAGONG, Dec 25 (BSS): A girl was burnt alive and 67 establishments, including 45 houses, were gutted in separate incidents of fire at Amin Colony under Panchlaish thana and Mizpara under Patenga thana in the port city last night and today, police and Fire Service sources said.
They said the girl identified as Shahnaz Begum, 12, daughter of Abdul Malek of Fatikchhari Upazila, was killed and 37 semi-pucca houses, 20 shops and two NGO offices were gutted in a devastating fire at Amin Colony beside Amin Jute Mills last night.
Valuables worth about Tk 1.4 million were burnt in the four-hour blaze that originated from an oven of a house around 11.50 pm.
The girl, who was sleeping inside a house, failed to come out of the house during the fire.
On information, fire firefighters from different areas of the city rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control at about 3.10 am.
In another incident, at least eight dwelling houses were gutted at Mizpara under Patenga thana early this morning, the sources said.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit at a house at 5.50 am and soon spread in adjacent houses, damaging property worth about Tk 0.6 million.
Firefighters with the help of local people extinguished the fire at about 7.30 am.
