Give highest priority to energy supply
Wednesday, 10 February 2010
HIGH economic growth in the new year must be the singular aim of the elected government as an effective response to the myriad of economic problems faced by the country. The economy will grow only when it can rely on increasing investment operations. The operations are for setting up new industries, expanding of new ones or creation of services. But whatever the nature of the enterprises, the same can be set up and operated based on adequate energy supply.
The first in the order of such energies in the Bangladesh context is power followed by gas. Good power supply is indispensable to run existing industries or newly commissioned ones. Entrepreneurs will not even risk setting up new industries without reasonable assurance of power supply. Gas power many industries directly in Bangladesh or is used to produce power or serve as the raw materials for some industries.
The government will have to take crash programmes right now to boost energy availability for keeping the wheels of the economy turning well for achieving the aspired economic growth rate.
