Glaring example of heroism recalled in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Mar 29 (BSS): Speakers at a discussion here have said the independence-seeker innocent Bangalees set up a glaring example of heroism through sacrificing 600 lives while gheraoing Rangpur Cantonment on March 28 in 1971.
Awami League (AL), different organisations and educational institutions organised the discussion at Nisbetganj Smriti Soudha 'Rakta Gaurab' premises on Saturday afternoon in observance of the 45th anniversary of Rangpur Cantonment Gherao Day.
The observance began through placing wreaths at the Smriti Soudha "Rakta Gaurab" at Nisbetganj Baddhyabhumi in the morning to pay due respect to the heroic Bangalees who embraced martyrdom while gheraoing Rangpur Cantonment on that day in 1971.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Rangpur Dr ATM Mahbubul Karim placed floral wreaths at the Smriti Soudha 'Rakta Gaurab' on behalf of the district administration to pay respects the martyred heroic Bangalees.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Priyosindhu Talukder, along with officials and employees, placed wreaths there on behalf of the upazila administration.
Led by Acting President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, leaders of Rangpur district and city units of AL, Chhatra League, Jubo League and Sramik League placed floral wreaths there.
Later, Sadar Upazila Muktijoddha Sangshad, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, socio-cultural organisations, teachers and students of Jamison Nesa High School, Nisbetganj Government Primary School and Radhakrisnapur Degree College also placed wreaths.
The leaders and workers of AL and different political parties, freedom fighters, GO-NGO officials, academicians, students, youths, ethnic community leaders, civil society members and local elite attended the discussion.
