GM to recall 2,000 workers in September

Friday, 25 March 2011

CHICAGO, Mar 24 (Xinhua): General Motors Company (GM) will recall the final 2,000 workers on lay off by September, Joe Ashton, vice president of United Auto Workers (UAW) said Wednesday at a bargaining convention in Detroit. "Those people will all be back at work in September, and we will have full employment for the first time," the Detroit News quoted Ashton as saying. Ashton said that once all workers are recalled, new hires can be brought in at a lower wage and this two-tier wage system is part of the current national agreement with the Detroit Big three, which will expire on Sept 14. Besides, all Ford workers are back except those temporarily off the job in Louisville and UAW is also working on Chrysler to bring back more parts production into the assembly plants in US, in a bid to adding more jobs.
