GMG Airlines unveiled its new logo and inducted a Boeing 767-300ER in its fleet Saturday aiming to rule the skies through expanding wings and providing warmth of Bangladeshi hospitality to its customers.
The new wide-body aircraft, painted with the company's new livery, was formally inaugurated at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka while its new logo was launched later on the day at a city hotel through a colourful ceremony.
Commerce Minister M Faruk Khan, Secretary to the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry Shafique Alam Mehdi, Vice-Chairman of Beximco Group Salman F Rahman and Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Air Commodore Sakeb Iqbal Khan Majlis formally inaugurated the new logo and the aircraft separately in presence of the airline's Managing Director Shahab Sattar and other dignitaries.
Salman F Rahman said by re-branding itself, GMG Airlines would vigorously be rejuvenated as a major carrier in the region.
He mentioned that the country's aviation industry is growing rapidly but it is largely dominated by foreign airlines.
"More that 22 foreign airlines impart our aviation industry and dominate nearly 85 per cent market share," he said adding that they (GMG) want to ensure that local airlines get what they deserve.
Mr Rahman said the new logo is considered a defining milestone in the process of change, reflecting GMG's spirit of flying.
"We are not in competition with the state-run Biman but surely want to complement, to obtain maximum from the existing airlines market potential," he said.
Beximco is fully committed to transforming GMG into a world-class airline with traditional Bangladeshi hospitality with our product customised specifically to our customers' needs in all segments, Mr Rahman elaborated.
GMG Airlines, now owned by the industrial conglomerate Beximco, started operation on April 6, 1998 with domestic services and launched international flights in September 2004, with flights between Chittagong and Kolkata.
Addressing as chief guest, Faruk Khan assured all-out support to private airlines from the government along with the national carrier Biman to boost the aviation sector of the country.
Mr Mehdi said that the government believes in open sky strategy which will be applicable for aviation industry as well.
"We will encourage healthy competition in the aviation industry. As long as they fulfil domestic and international aviation regulations, the government will ensure ground for fair-play," he added.
