Go soft on Sidr survivors

Wednesday, 5 December 2007

Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed has asked the NGOs (non-government organisations) to be sympathetic to taking loan repayments from their clients in Sidr-ravaged areas, a government spokesman said.
Fakhruddin made the request while the representatives of different NGOs working in the cyclone-hit areas held a meeting with him at his office in the city Tuesday.
LGRD Adviser M Anwarul Iqbal and Agriculture Adviser Dr CS Karim were present at the meeting.
The NGO representatives who attended the meeting included Grameen Bank, BRAC, ASA, PKSF, CODEC, World Vision, RRF, TMSS, Padakkhep, Shapla Phul, Hilful Fuzul, Uddipan and Sankalpa.
The CA asked the NGOs to make a clear announcement about microcredit repayments.
"If nothing else, please be sympathetic at least to those without means of income," Syed Fahim Munaim quoted Fakhruddin as saying.
The CA's press secretary briefed reporters on the outcome of the meeting that came amid wide allegations of NGOs mounting pressure on their clients for repayments, report bdnews24.com/ UNB.
Grameen Bank had earlier made an announcement that it would not take back loans from their clients until June 2008. "So there is no scope for confusion," Munaim quoted the CA as saying.
