Golpata collection starts in Sundarbans

BAGERHAT, Jan 7 (UNB): The collection of Golpata is going on in full swing in the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world.
Taking permission from forest division, Bawalies, a class of people engaged in extracting wood, timber and honey, have already started to collect Golpata, leaves of small trees, big sized and used in that ching.
A target has been fixed to collect 12,72,266 quintal of Golpata from the east and west divisions of the Sundarbans in the current season.
Poor and low income groups of people of Bagerhat, Khulna, Pirojpur, Barguna and Barisal districts use Golpata for making their houses.
Thousands of Bawalis from Bagerhat and adjoining areas of the Sundarbans are now passing busy time.
Mihir Kumar Doe, DFO, Sundarbans East Division of Bagerhat told UNB that Golpata were found abundantly in Sharankhola range 1 and Chandpai range 2 under the east division and in Satkhira range 2 and Khulna range 2 under the west division of the Sundarbans.
Golpata collection will continue till March 30.
