Tuesday, 3 June 2008
Gono Forum President Kamal Hossain Monday suggested establishment of a government of national consensus after the general elections following the model of South Africa's anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, report agencies.
Dr Kamal placed a package of proposals including the post-election government of national consensus and lifting of the state of emergency during dialogue with the caretaker government led by Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed at the CA's office.
"Even those who had jailed Mandela were inducted into his cabinet after the post-apartheid period in South Africa," he told a joint press briefing after the two-hour dialogue on pre- and post-election issues.
Dr Kamal said they want that the winning parties after the elections would form a government of national consensus on the basis of consultations to introduce healthy politics and good governance in the country.
They also demanded to expedite election related activities for holding the next general polls in a free, fair and impartial manner as per the roadmap announced by the Election Commission (EC).
In a joint briefing after the dialogue, Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said the Gono Forum leaders also raised different issues to ensure healthy political environment in the country transforming from "sick" politics through national consensus.
"They demanded to hold a meaningful election free from black money, muscle power and politicisation of administration to ensure democracy and good governance," he said quoting the Gono Forum leaders.
Dr Hossain Zillur said the Gono Forum leaders also put emphasis on how a national consensus could be created through the dialogue for transforming to a meaningful democracy.
Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said the government made it clear that the Election Commission was working independently with all out support and assistance of the government.
Describing the dialogue open and meaningful, the adviser said Gono Forum also gave valuable suggestions on election expenditure and other issues relating to holding a money, muscle and political influence-free election.
In the dialogue, Gono Forum President Kamal Hossain said that his party had demanded to hold black money and muscle power-free election through national consensus as per the roadmap.
"We have also told the government to complete all relevant works including preparation of voters' list as early as possible to this end," he added.
Dr Kamal Hossain asserted on politics for peace and unity to build up the nation saying the present government has to create such an environment where honest and capable persons can take part in all elections.
He laid emphasis on united efforts of those who would be elected in the next general polls to give healthy politics and good governance an institutional shape.
The Gono Forum president also put stress on bringing reforms to electoral process, ensuring corruption-free administration and reducing disparity from the society for achieving overall socio-economic development of the country.
However, Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said the government had a plan to hold meeting with the ethnic community leaders on the basis of recommendations of different political parties.
He informed the press that as part of the ongoing dialogue, the government would sit with the business leaders Tuesday.
