Good yield of coriander satisfies cultivators in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Jan 29: A good yield of coriander leaves has made the cultivators under Rangpur district delighted this season.
According to sources harvesting of coriander leaves is going on in full swing across the region. The growers have been earning a good profit from selling their produce in markets since very beginning of the season.
Due to easy cultivation process, low production cost and satisfactory profit, farming of the crop is on the increase across the region in recent times, sources said.
A good number of peasants in the areas are involved in the farming of coriander leaves as its farming has proved lucrative in recent years, sources also said.
Hafizul Mia, a farmer of Rupshi village at Ranipukur union in Mithapukur upazila told this FE correspondent that he has cultivated coriander leaves on 40 decimals of land and already earned Tk 15,000 from its sale. He is optimistic of achieving more profit during rest of the season.
Anisur, another farmer of Char Thakurdas village at Kawnia upazila, said that they prefer coriander leaves farming as it is more lucrative than cultivation of paddy and some other crops. Its harvesting can be started within 40 days after sowing seeds, he added.
Traders from Dhaka and some other districts are coming to the region everyday to buy fresh vegetables including coriander leaves, sources said.
Presently, different kitchen markets of the region are overflowing with huge quantities of coriander leaves. The quantity is on the rise as there has been a abundant production of the same this year, said Naeem, a wholesaler at Rangpur city bazar.
At the beginning of the season it was sold at exorbitant price but subsequently its price came down, he added.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said the farming of coriander leaves is on the rise across the region owing to huge demand and profit.
DAE also helps the growers by providing them necessary suggestions and agro- inputs. Due to early harvest growers can earn huge profit, sources added.
