Good yield of jute makes Jamalpur farmers happy
Target almost achieved in Aman cultivation in Khulna

Farmers have produced 3,16626 bale of jute, the golden fibre of Bangladesh, in Jamalpur district this year. Reasonable price of jute in local markets also makes farmers profitable, reports BSS.
Sources said per maund natural fiber was sold Tk 2500 to 3000 from the very beginning of harvesting.
Farmer Md Abdul Wadud at village Sapdhari in Islampur Upazila said he cultivated Tosha variety of jute on three bighas of land and got bumper yield due to short duration of flood, availability of fertiliser and co-operation of agriculture department.
He said he got 14 maund jute fiber from a bigha of land and also got Tk 7000 by selling jute stick from a bigha of land.
According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources, farmers brought 28933 hectares of land under jute cultivation in the district this year. But recent flood damaged 2708 hectares of land.
The office said farmers got 20287 bales of local variety jute from 4140 hectares of land, 292266 bales Tosha variety from 23627 hectares, 554 bales of Mesta variety from 63 hectares and 3519 bales of Kenaf variety from 395 hectares of land.
DAE additional deputy director Mohammad Shakhawat Ikram said favourable weather, short time flood and proper nursing helped farmers get good yield of jute this year.
Meanwhile, at least 98.82 per cent target of cultivating Aman paddy has been achieved in the Khulna agriculture region this season, an official said on Thursday, reports BSS.
The DAE fixed the Aman plantation target on 2, 99,110 hectares of land and production target of 84,723 metric tons of clean Aman rice (1, 20,785 tones of paddy) in Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira and Narail in the region, Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Deputy Director Md Hafizur Rahman said.
"Farmers have cultivated Aman paddy on 2,95,570 hectares of land, less by 3,540 hectares or 1.18 per cent against the fixed farming target," he told the news agency.
In Khulna, farmers have cultivated Aman paddy on 94,185 hectares of land, exceeded by 1,015 hectares or 101.09 per cent against the fixed farming target.
Besides, Bagerhat farmers have cultivated on 71,170 hectares of land, less by 2,835 or 96.17 percent against the fixed farming target, Satkhira farmers on 88,525 hectares, less by 1,385 hectares or 98.46 percent and Narail farmers on 42,090 hectares, exceeded by 65 hectares or 101.15 per cent.
Due to shortfall of rain during the seedlings transplantation period in Bagerhat and Satkhira, farmers could not able to fulfill the cultivation target, said Rahman.
The farmers now have put their all-out efforts in nursing the growing Aman plants on vast tracts of crop land that haa worn an eye-catching look.
