Gopalganj farmers cashing in on bumper production of vegetables

GOPALGANJ, Dec. 28: Farmers of Gopalganj district are expecting a bumper production of winter vegetables this season due to favourable weather conditions and help from local agriculture offices.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj has fixed a production target of 56,481 metric tonnes of winter vegetables 3,022 hectares of land in five upazilas of the district this season.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) and agriculture extension department, Gopalganj have distributed sufficient quantity of high quality seeds, other agro-inputs among the farmers and provided them with necessary technical assistance.
Besides, different banks, including Krishi Unnoyon Bank and NGOs have provided agriculture loans and interest-free loans among the farmers to make the wither vegetables programme a success.
Early harvest of vegetables have also brought smiles to the farmers as they are getting good prices at the beginning of the season.
Atul Krishna Mallick, Deputy Director (DD), Gopalganj said the farmers of the district are showing interest in growing vegetables as they find it more profitable.
Abu Talib Mollah (48), a vegetable growers of Gopalganj Sadar said, the early harvest of vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, radish, bean, tomato and potato also made the farmers happy, as they are getting better prices at the beginning of the season.
