Government asked to produce Mahmud before court tomorrow

Wednesday, 7 July 2010

The Supreme Court has ordered the government to produce detained daily Amar Desh acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman before the court Thursday in a contempt of court petition.
A full six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Fazlul Karim gave the order Tuesday, reports bdnews24.com.
The High Court (HC) on June 2 issued a contempt of court rule and asked Amar Desh acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman, its Publisher Hashmat Ali Hashu and three others to appear in court on July 5, following a petition.
All the accused, except Mr Rahman, appeared before the court Monday and Tuesday.
Rahman's lawyer Abdur Razzak told the court at Tuesday's hearing that his client could not appear before the court as he was now behind bars in another case.
Earlier, police on June 2, stormed the Amar Desh newspaper office and arrested Acting Editor Rahman on fraud charges brought against him by the paper's publisher Hashmat Ali Hashu, who himself was briefly 'detained' on June 1.
