The government has assigned the US firm Excelerate Energy to carry out a comprehensive study over the next four weeks on suitable location to build the country's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import platform, officials said Wednesday.
"Excelerate Energy will also recommend best possible option to import LNG and the estimated cost to implement the project," Petrobangla chairman Dr Hossain Monsur told the FE Wednesday.
He said the fate of the planned LNG project will largely depend on the Excelerate's recommendation.
After visiting several prospective sites including Kutubdia, Matarbari and Sangu the US firm proposed several infrastructure options for importing LNG in the country, said Dr Monsur.
The LNG import platform options as proposed by Excelerate include deep-water buoy facility, shallow platform facility and land-based LNG import facility.
It will take eight months to 12 months to build one of the LNG import infrastructures.
The government is considering importing LNG via special tankers with floating, storage, re-gasification units or FSRUs as a quick fix to address the country's natural gas crisis, especially in the port city Chittagong.
