Government policies and business

Friday, 31 August 2007

The most important feature of a successful business environment is the confidence on the part of the members of the business community that they can rely on positive conditions that make up the external environment of their businesses. These conditions have many elements where the government has a significant role to play such as the government's fiscal and monetary policies that either encourage or discourage business, the sufficient duration of policies by the government which businesses can interpret as useful, existence of proper infrastructures and the government's promotion of such infrastructure building, et cetera.
But more significantly, in the present context of Bangladesh, government must have respect for ethically operated businesses and should patronise the businesses-generally-because the economy's doing well is completely dependent on business operators feeling good and finding their ways forward facilitated by all, specially by the government. But businesses in general in Bangladesh, today, have been gripped by all sorts of fears and disillusionment.
Clearly, government must do a great deal more to remove the fears of business operators and persuade them back into full fledged business activities.
