Govt allows import of up to six-yr-old reconditioned cars

Thursday, 7 August 2008

Up to six-year-old reconditioned cars, instead of four-year-old, can now be imported from abroad as the Commerce Ministry has issued an amended order regarding this and other imports, reports UNB.

An announcement Wednesday said the government on specific conditions has revised the Import Policy Order 2006-2009 as per provision of the Import and Export Control Act, 1950.

The revised statutory regulatory order (SRO) of the Commerce Ministry said reconditioned cars of up to six years old can be imported from a third country for personal use.

The registration certificate and the registration cancellation certificate of a car, which was used in a particular country, would have to be submitted to the customs authorities in case of car import.

'Any importable goods worth not more than US$ 35,000 can be imported annually to Bangladesh on payment of the price,' said the SRO about the individual import ceiling.

However, it said paddy, wheat, maize, soyabean and palm oils, onion and fish worth up to US$ 20,000 can be imported from Myanmar in a single consignment. Other goods worth US$ 10,000 can be imported in this case.

In case of rice import under government management, a single consignment can cost up to US$ 2 million without opening any letter of credit (LC). In this case, the limit of maximum US$ 35,000 won't be applicable.
