Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Monday that the government was destroying country's politics in a planned way.
"You (people) should remember that Awami League was in power in 1975 and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the prime minister and president. He (Sheikh Mujibur Rahman) had introduced one party system and BAKSAL in the country. He snatched people's freedom of speech and closed down newspapers. But there is no scope this time," secretary general of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a rally in the Dolaikhal area in the capital.
"The present government has annulled caretaker government provision. But this caretaker government was a demand of the ruling Awami League. Today to remain in power they have annulled the caretaker government provision," he stated.
"We (BNP) have been organizing rallies and road marches over the last one year and a total of 20 leaders and activists of our party had sacrificed their lives. This fascist government arrested and disappeared many of our party leaders and activists over the last 16 years," he maintained.
"If the next elections are not free, fair and participatory then the people of the country and the international world would not accept it," he warned while mentioning irregularities during elections in 2014 and 2018.
Convener of Dhaka south unit BNP Abdus Salam presided over the rally which was also addressed by party standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan and member of Dhaka south engineer Ishraq Hossain.
Meanwhile, BNP postponed its rally which was scheduled to be held in the city's Aminbazar on Monday as the authorities concerned denied permission, reports UNB.
"We have suspended today (Monday)'s rally at Amin Bazar as the administration did not allow us," Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of BNP Chairperson's media wing, told the media.
