FE Report
The government Tuesday approved 0.75 kilometre extension of the Khilgaon flyover aimed at easing traffic congestion in the city's overcrowded Khilgaon rail and road intersections, officials said.
Presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the government's highest project approval body-ECNEC- has approved construction of a new loop in the Sayedabad side of the Khilgaon flyover at a cost of TK697.5 million.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council also approved seven other projects involving Tk9.29 billion for infrastructure and socio-economic development.
Planning Commission officials said the new loop of the Khilgaon flyover would be constructed in the Sayedabad side of the flyover which would help the passengers from the capital's eastern side and Progoti Sarani.
"After building the new loop, the people from the eastern side of the city will be able to go to Rajarbagh and the capital's commercial hub Motijheel area in the city easily," a senior official of the Planning Commission said.
The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) built and opened the country's biggest 1.9-kilometre Khilgaon flyover to traffic in March 2005 to ease the nagging traffic congestion in the city centre, connecting Rajarbagh in the south, Malibagh in the west and Sayedabad in the east.
