Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said gunmen have been assigned to 20 people, including the editors of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, following the attacks on the newspapers' offices, report agencies
He made the remarks while talking to reporters after a meeting of the advisory council committee on the law and order at his Secretariat office in the capital on Monday.
He said the DMP has arrested 17 people in connection with the attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo and Daily Star.
"Gunmen have been given for the safety of the editors of the two newspapers and security has been increased at their homes."
Hadi, convener of Inqilab Moncho, died last Thursday while undergoing treatment in Singapore after being shot by an assailant.
Following death news of Hadi, convener of Inqilab Moncho, several establishments, including Prothom Alo, Daily Star and Chhayanaut, were attacked and set on fire amid protests and unrest.
Jahangir said the government is giving 'utmost importance to the trial of those involved in Hadi's killing.
"The government is determined to ensure justice in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a frontline fighter of the July Uprising," he said.
Asked whether Faisal Karim Masud, a key suspect in the killing, was in the country or abroad, Jahangir said the 'main mastermind' of the murder would be identified and brought to justice soon.
"The main mastermind of this incident, Faisal, will be tracked down and brought to justice very soon," he said, adding that details could not be disclosed at this stage in the interest of the investigation.
"If I knew where Hadi's killer was, I would have caught him," Jahangir said.
"He could be in the country or outside. But he did not go through legal channels. I cannot say whether he went through illegal channels or not."
Responding to questions about rumours of a 'hit list' of 50 people circulating after Hadi's assassination, the home adviser said intelligence agencies had already identified those at risk.
