BENAPOLE, Jan 01 (UNB): The government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attaches importance to developing ports and waterways.
Goods carrying containers will be shipped to capital by waterways from Chittagong to ease container jam at Chittagong Port and lessen pressure on highways.
The country's third sea port will be built in Sonadia Island soon and 17 more Ro Ro ferries will be added to the BIWTC's fleet of Ro Ro ferries.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan said in a view-exchange meeting with customs officials and employees, customs and C & F agents, transport agents, importers and other businessmen after inaugurating Export Terminal in Benapole, the biggest land port of the country, Sunday.
The minister informed that an advisory committee will be formed to stop theft and irregularities at Benapole Port and industrial police will be deployed there to check pilferage.
He disclosed that the government has allocated Tk 114.73 billion (11,473 crore) to develop waterways.
"After Bangabandhu Sheikh Hasina attaches importance to the uplift of the country's river routes and waterways", Shajahan Khan said.
He also said that export through Benapole Land Port marked a 4-time rise over import last year and 30-40 ships moor at Mongla Port everyday since it was improved, including its berthing facilities, after taking over of offices by the government three years ago.
About sudden rise in road crashes across the country the minister said that drivers causing accidents on roads and highways would be brought under law and tougher punishment will be meted out to them if proved guilty.
"Offending drivers of vehicles will be tried under Section 304 instead of Sec 302", he informed.
The minister also addressed a meeting of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation, held at Sramik Bhaban at Chachra in Jessore town.
