Govt conspires to defer parliamentary polls: AL

Wednesday, 27 August 2008

Bangladesh Awami League (AL) Tuesday accused the caretaker government of plotting to defer the stalled parliamentary polls in the name of holding upazila elections and registration of political parties, reports UNB.

The AL leaders warned that any deviation from holding the parliamentary polls in the third week of December would compel them and the people to take to the street to establish democracy.

They demanded the government to declare a specific date for the parliamentary polls immediately.

Awami League leadership came up with the hard-hitting remarks at a discussion arranged by Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad at the Engineers' Institution in the city Tuesday marking the 33rd death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

AL presidium members Amir Hossain Amu, Suranjit Sengupta, acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, health affairs secretary Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin, among others, addressed the meeting.

The meeting was presided over by Dr Rahul Haque.
