Govt contemplates train fare raise

The government is contemplating raising train fares shortly following rise in the prices of fuel in the international market.
This was disclosed by the Communications Secretary Mahbubur Rahman at a round table meeting held in the city Friday.
"The Finance Ministry is pursuing for raising the same for long and we are going to increase the train fares shortly although we could not improve the services," he said while addressing a round table discussion held at the National Press Club Friday.
The Chittagong Journalists Forum-Dhaka (CJFD) organised the round table discussion on the speedy rail communication between Chittagong and Dhaka.
Home Secretary Abdul Karim joined the meeting as special guest.
Communications Secretary also said the work for the chord line between Laksam and Dhaka is going on and it will be completed within 2009.
"We think that the train services between the port city of Chittagong and Dhaka will improve following implementation of the project," he added.
He also said that the overall train services are likely to improve within the next five to seven years if the present pace of work of different on going projects continues.
Communications secretary also said that the government is mulling to invite tenders for the beautification of the Kamlapur Railway Station.
"We will call tender for the beautification of Kamlapur Railway Station as the same is regarded as beauty of a city," he added.
He also said the government is also planning to handover the works of maintenance of the locomotives and coaches to private sector companies.
"The color of the coaches has faded and we are planning to involve private parties in this connection besides maintenances of the railway engines and coaches," he added.
President of Chittagong Samity Abu Alam Chowdhury, CJFD president Shahin Ul Islam and General Secretary M Sayem Tipu also spoke on the occasion.
