Govt decides on mode of BDR mutineers' trial today

Monday, 14 September 2009

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said Sunday the Supreme Court (SC) expressed its opinion that the BDR mutineers could not be tried under the Army Act, reports UNB.
Briefing reporters at his ministry, he said 11-member full bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court led by the Chief Justice gave the opinion on the President's Reference on the issue.
The law minister said an inter-ministerial meeting would be held today (Monday) to take a decision on the process of trial.
He said the Supreme Court might have given some directions though the judges said 'no' to holding trial of the mutineers under the Army Act.
Against the backdrop of the directions, Barrister Shafique said the government would decide about the law to ensure quick completion of the trial process.
On August 18, the President's reference seeking the Appellate Division's opinion under which law the BDR mutineers should be tried was sent to the SC.
On Thursday last (September 10), the Supreme Court sent its opinion to the President. The law ministry Sunday received the Supreme Court's opinion from the President's office.
