The government, in an advance effort to stabilise the volatile sugar market during the holy month of Ramadan, has decided to import sugar, Industries Minister Dilip Barua has said.
"The Cabinet Purchase Committee has already approved import of 25,000 tonnes of sugar. Our ministry has also set a target of 0.10 million tonnes sugar import through Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC)," the minister said while talking to newsmen at his office in the city Thursday, reports UNB.
The Industries Ministry hosted the briefing to inform the newsmen about the progress of state-owned mills, factories and government's initiatives for the development industrial sector.
The minister said the price of the sugar would be fixed once the import is done and the price would be kept within the purchase power of common people.
Revealing the government's plan to increase fertiliser production, Mr Barua said the government has taken steps to set up three new urea fertiliser factories having 5,77,500 tonnes annual production capacity.
