NILPHAMARI, Dec 30: The government is losing a large sum of money in revenue from sand, rock and stone extractions from Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas in Nilphamari district.
The extracted materials are supplied to different parts of the country.
The loss is due to the absence of fundamental rules and regulations for the extraction of sand and rock from khas lands and lands having personal possession or entitlements.
It is also alleged that the government is deprived of royalty. Sources said there is a vast deposit of those materials in the upzilas.
Meanwhile, panic is prevailing among the people of Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas, as illegal stone and sand extraction has created several underground traps.
Local people alleged that a section of unscrupulous people were extracting sand and rock using heavy drill dredgers from a depth of 70 to 80 feet below ground ignoring the government ban.
Sources added that in the two recent land subsidence incidents one person died and five others were seriously injured.
