Govt desperate to establish one-party rule: BNP

Friday, 13 June 2014

BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged Thursday that the government has created a reign of terror in the country by killing opposition men in its desperate bid to re-establish a one-party rule, reports UNB.
In a statement, he said, "The current illegal regime has turned desperate to re-establish one-party rule through creating an anarchic and appalling situation in the country by killing opposition leaders and activists not only by their supported terrorists but also by law enforcers."
The statement was issued condemning the killing of Jubo Dal leader Shakil reportedly by Jubo League and Chhatra League cadres at Gafargaon in Mymensingh Wednesday.
Mirza Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, said the government has riddled people's democratic and basic rights with bayonet to establish its autocracy.
He warned the government that it will not be able to escape public wrath by resorting to killings, forced disappearances and abductions.
The BNP leader claimed that members of the government railway police (GRP) on Thursday handed over Shakil to identified cadres of Jubo League and Chhatra League after his arrest.
Later, the cadres of the two ruling party associate bodies killed him by stabbing and beating mercilessly.
Strongly protesting the murder, Fakhrul demanded the government arrest and mete out punishment to Shakil's killers immediately.
Another report adds: BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan Thursday said those who deny the role of their party founder Ziaur Rahman in the country's Liberation War are nothing but political louts.
"Ziaur Rahman had proclaimed the country's independence in 1971 as the chief of the provisional government. Then the Mujibnagar government had been formed. Those who don't recognise Ziaur Rahman's contributions are political brutes," he told a discussion.
Tejgaon thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal arranged the discussion in the city's Karwan Bazar area, marking the 33rd death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman.
Mr Khan, also a BNP standing committee member, said Zia proclaimed the independence to save the country's people from the Pakistani occupation forces as those who were supposed to take decision to this end were either arrested or on the run.
