Govt destroys democracy thru one-sided election

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Monday that the government has destroyed the country's democracy by holding a one-sided election on January 07.
It also accused the government of establishing a one-party rule in the country by oppressing and suppressing its opponents.
Senior joint secretary general of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the comments at a milad and doa mahfil programme seeking early recovery of ailing party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia at the party's headquarters in the capital's Naya Paltan area.
He said, "The government has destroyed the country's democracy by staging a dummy election held recently."
He said that party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was not getting proper medical treatment in the country.
He alleged that the government had snatched away her human rights.
He claimed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was doing politics by wearing an attire of malice.
Mr Rizvi further said that those who were used to spreading lies frequently and playing dubious roles could only support the Awami League.
He also said that the law minister had destroyed the country's judiciary as per the directives of the Prime Minister.
The government had turned the whole country into a prison by confining thousands of opposition leaders and activists, he added.
The country's economy was now in a dire state following mega-corruption committed by the government, he said.
He said that all tyrants' in different countries in the world had lost their power, and similarly, the authoritarian government of Bangladesh would one day fall.
He expressed confidence that the through mass movement would quit this government from power (ruling Awami League).
President of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, an associate body of the party's women affairs, Afroza Abbas presided over the event where organising secretary of the party Advocate Abdus Salam Azad and convener of Dhaka south unit Mahila Dal Ruma Akter were present, among others.
Earlier, BNP brought out a procession demanding the release of detained leaders of the party including party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
The senior joint secretary general of the party led the procession.
The procession started at Shantinar intersection and terminated at Kakrail intersection.
