The government will meet the donors, including the World Bank, today to explore avenues for boosting the impoverished southwestern regional economy after the construction of the Padma Bridge, officials said Wednesday.
The meeting to be attended by representatives of 20 key ministries will be held at the economic relations division (ERD) at Agargaon in the capital.
"In the post-Padma bridge era there will be some multi-sectoral impacts on the southwestern (S-W) zone's economy. What kind of programmes should be undertaken to maintain the development pace there would be discussed at the meeting," ERD secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said.
"We will open the forum so that government ministries and agencies could take necessary steps to continue the development pace in the impoverished southwestern region," he told the FE.
The ERD secretary and the World Bank would present two papers on the policy and programmes in the post-Padma bridge period in the south-western region.
"Say, the Mongla port will be connected with the capital directly after building the Padma Bridge. So, the road and other facilities between Dhaka and the port need to be developed. The government agencies concerned should be prepared for that from now," he said.
