Govt eyes increased export income from diversified products: Titu

State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu said on Saturday that the government is expecting to increase the country's export income from diversified products apart from readymade garments.
He was speaking at a press briefing ahead of the inauguration of the 28th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF)-2024 at Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre (BBCFEC) at Purbabachal.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the month- long fair at 10:30 am today (Sunday).
"The main objective of the fair is to increase our export income through product diversification by reducing dependency solely on exporting RMG products," he said.
"We (the government) will try to promote and encourage our local industries. Our export has increased six times," he added.


He said that the main aim of the fair is to promote the country's local industries.
Mr Titu directed the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) to stay alert so that visitors at the fair cannot be deceived by unscrupulous traders.
He said that they would arrange a visit of officials of different embassies and high commissions stationed in Dhaka at the fair aiming to increase overseas trade.
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Tapan Kanti Gosh said that they were expecting more visitors at the fair this year following improved road communication.
He said that this fair has turned into an annual and traditional fair for the people.
Vice-chairman of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) AHM Ahsan said that they have appointed 50 persons through outsourcing for ensuring safety and security of the visitors during fair.
He also said that police and Ansar personnel would also remain deployed at the fair venue to ensure security of the visitors.
"If necessary, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel will work as striking force for security purpose during fair," he added.
Regarding transport arrangement for the visitors from the downtown of the capital to the fair venue (Purbachal), he said that the EPB has positively discussed this with the state-run bus service provider BRTC.
He also said that there would be BRTC buses in the city to facilitate visitors' journey to the fair venue.
He said that this time visitors could get on buses from Farmgate area in city to reach the fair venue.
The fair will showcase different varieties of local and foreign products.
Companies from India, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkiye, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal and Hong Kong will participate in the show.
Local RMG products, machineries, carpets, cosmetics, electrical and electronic products, leather and jute goods, plastic and food products, household items, utensils etc would be put on display at the fair.
The Ministry of Commerce and Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) have been jointly organising the DITF since 1995.
The DITF was not organised in 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic.
The fair was held at Shere-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital from 1995 to 2020.
The 2022 version of the DITF was held at its permanent venue at BBCFEC in Purbachal of Rupganj upazila under Narayanganj district.
