CHITTAGONG, Nov 08: Convener of Chittagong city BNP and former commerce minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury today said that the government has failed to curb the price of essential commodities due to its so-called monitoring on the traders by the law enforcers.
He was talking to local print and electronic media at his residence at Mehdibagh area in the city this morning.
"The importers and exporters of the country suffered financial loss under some pressure after the 1/11 and were put to unreasonable fear of arrest and raid by the police and rapid action battalion (RAB) throughout the country which compelled many to go into hiding," the former commerce minister said.
The traders have tried their best to recover that loss by not heeding to the repeated call of commerce minister Faruk Khan for importing consumer goods and bringing down the prices within the reach of the common people, he added.
Mr Chowdhury said, the people thought that the grand alliance government could really change the fate of the common men as per commitment before election. But we find that the fate of the people has rather worsened. Prices of all commodities have gone up.
He said that the situation in the Chittagong port had deteriorated when Afsarul Amin, after assuming the charge of the ministry of shipping, had tried to exert their influence on the port activities.
"The situation in the port may deteriorate if the government does not think anew to tackle the situation for smooth functioning of port activities," the former minister said.
