Govt failure to ensure Bangla use everywhere irks HC

Tuesday, 29 April 2014

The High Court expressed Tuesday its disappointment at the government stance over implementation of its orders on the use of Bangla in all advertisements of electronic media and on vehicle registration plates, signboards and billboards across the country.
“It appears that the respondents didn’t take any effective steps sans  posting letters to each other, and it seems that the higher authorities of the government has no interest in using Bangla,” observed the High Court during the hearing on a contempt-of-court petition facing by six secretaries, according to a news agency.
The contempt-of-court plea developed following non-implementation of the HC order over a public interest litigation writ petition on Bangla use.
An HC division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice
ABM Altaf Hossain, however, asked the respondents to implement its February 17 order and submit a follow-up report by May 15.
According to Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy, two reports -–one from the Cabinet Secretary and the other from the Information Secretary–were submitted before the HC bench.
