Govt firm to develop CHT: Adviser

RANGAMATI, July 19 (BSS): Adviser for Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury said the government is determined to bring overall development in the hill districts.
"Tk 2.57 billion (257 crore) has been allocated in the current fiscal year for developing these hill districts, including construction of regional council complex, residential buildings, improvement of communication system and betterment in agriculture, education and health sectors", he said.
The adviser, also holding the portfolio of foreign ministry, said this while addressing as the chief guest a development review meeting of Rangamati district at the local circuit house Wednesday evening, an official handout said Thursday.
CHT Regional Council Chairman Jyotindra Bodhipriya Larma, Rangamati Hill District Council (RHDC) Chairman Jagat Jyoti Chakma and Ministry of CHT Affairs Secretary Abdus Sabur also spoke on the occasion.
Chowdhury said the government has taken up a programme to recast the three hill district councils to bring dynamism in the activities of the region.
"New chairmen and members have already been appointed for these district councils", he said.
Following these changes, the adviser said, people in the region would be benefited from a positive impact with peace and amity.
"There are huge economic potentials in the CHT and the government wants to promote tourism in the area", he said.
Later, addressing a function at the Rangamati Tribal Cultural institute auditorium Wednesday night, Chowdhury said the government would build a modern auditorium in the district headquarters.
"The CHT affairs ministry will provide funds for this purpose and construction work will start in the current fiscal", he said.
The adviser described the natural beauty and culture of Rangamati as unique and said, "For this the hill district deserves to become the cultural capital of the country."
