Govt for formulating time-bound textile policy: Geetiara

Industries and textiles adviser Geetiara Safiya Choudhury said Sunday there is an ample scope for incorporating suggestions from the stakeholders in the draft textiles policy 2007 to make it time befitting.
She was addressing as the chief guest at a validation workshop on Textile Policy 2007 held at conference room of BTMA in the city. Stakeholders in textile industry participated in the workshop.
The adviser said another meeting with the all stakeholders will be held shortly after meeting with the relevant ministries.
"We are really serious about formulating a time-bound textile policy as there is fast changing scenario to cope with the pace of need in a modern world. We must have a good policy," she said adding the last textile policy was adopted in 1995.
Secretary of the Ministry of Jute and Textiles Md Abdur Rashid Sarker presided over the workshop while presidents of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knit Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) spoke on the occasion.
Chairman of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) Abdul Hye also addressed at the programme.
However, the stakeholders said that all the previous policies remain ineffective mainly due to lack of cooperation from the concerned ministries.
They urged the government to take measures so that textiles ministry could handle all the issues of the apparel sub-sector.
BKMEA President Md Fazlul Hoque told the workshop that the draft policy lacked specific guidelines that could help flourish the textile sector.
He also said: "We need such a policy that can strengthen the apparel sub-sector as it is main consumer in textiles sector," he added.
